Charity Goal – Jubilee Designs

Kicking off our blog series in preparation for PULP: paper art party 2017 and our charity fundraising campaign, here are a few words from Sharon Abel, Art Director at Evergreen Centre and founder of Jubilee Designs.

The Evergreen Centre for Street Youth offers drop-in arts programming three times a week. Youth are invited to engage in both individual activities and group projects, both for their own use and for exhibitions such as PULP.

Many of the youth come to Art Space with a desire to make things they can sell, such as jewelry or bags or screen printed t-shirts. Although Evergreen has an employment centre and can provide assistance with finding work, so many youth are not ready for full-time employment and would benefit from positive casual work experiences.

Over the summer, we were able to launch a pilot project to create a social enterprise out of Evergreen: Jubilee Designs, a design and decor business idea that is founded on the creativity and resilience of our youth. Here, youth were able to focus on their primary goals such as mental health or housing stability, while working a few hours a week in a supportive and creative environment. They created beautiful decorations and accessories using discarded and re-purposed material, which will be sold in our Etsy Shop.

The pilot was extremely helpful in generating some data about the capacity of our youth and the impact that this kind of program could have on their well-being. In one-on-ones, youth often listed goals relating to economic stability, mental health, and housing. They all affirmed that Jubilee was useful in helping them to move forward towards reaching those goals.

“I feel like Jubilee was really helpful in stabilizing my mental health… I knew I could call in sick, or call in “homeless” and that I wouldn’t have to worry about being punished or judged.”
– post-pilot follow-up interview
“I can’t believe I’m getting paid to do something fun.”
– Unprompted comment during studio hours by Jubilee artist

The funding we received from PULP allowed us to pay the youth a fair hourly wage and purchase the supplies we needed to launch our business.
