Emerging Writers Reading Series
The Emerging Writers Reading Series – Read! Listen! Have Fun! The Emerging Writers Reading Series is returning with new hosts to Card-yard at BIG on Bloor 2017! Originally founded by Jess Taylor in 2012, the EW Reading Series has been on hiatus since June of 2016. Marcia Walker and Mahak Jain are reviving the reading series whose readers have gone on to win awards, place their work, publish books, and gain further recognition as the up-and-coming writers of Canada. EW has been in every Card-yard event since its initiation in 2013 and we are happy to have them back with us on Sunday, July 23, at noon to 1:30pm.
Flamenco Performance by Lala and Alison MacDonald
Larissa (aka “Lala”) is a Toronto based flamenco dancer. She first discovered flamenco as a child and was enraptured by its music and dance. Larissa has performed in cities across Canada and in 2016, co-founded the flamenco dance collective, Illumina Flamenco. Larissa regularly teaches adults and children at Dance Teq Centre and the Academy of Spanish Dance. Visit http://www.lalaflamenco.com/
Toronto dancer and choreographer Alison Macdonald has been performing and teaching around the city for many years. She has a background in percussive dance forms but dedicates her focus to flamenco by participating in workshops and returning to Spain frequently for training. Alison is a co-founder of the Toronto based collective Triana Project and has been a member of the Compania Carmen Romero. She has had the pleasure of performing at the Toronto International Flamenco Festival in 2012 and 2013 and at the 2013 Festival Flamenco de Montreal both as a soloist and with Triana Project. Alison was co-recipient of the Audience Choice Award and Paula Citron Fresh Blood 2014 Dance Award for her choreographic collaboration, Silencio, with Iryna Gordon and Pamela Briz. Together they have since co-founded ViDAnza, a contemporary flamenco collective.
Lala and Alison will have live performances with musicians and a flamenco dance workshop during the festival.
The Great Baldini Magic Show
Baldini has been a performance illusionist for over 15 years and his approach to presenting Magic has always been about making people smile. When engaged with his subjects, he perfectly blends highly witty comedy with a powerfully engaging, “blow-your-mind” repertoire of illusions, thus producing a palpable sense of mysteriously hysterical Magic. Baldini also has extensive experience performing in front of large audiences. He has put on over 65 shows in the Ontario Science Centre’s 470 seat auditorium and has led over 70 Science of Magic workshops there as well. He has appeared on mainstream TV a number of times, including “The Listener” & “The L.A. Complex” (CTV), “The Second City Project” (Global), “The Zone” & “Zoink’d” (YTV), “Breakfast Television” (CityTV), CP24 Breakfast (CP24), “The Being Frank Show” (CHCH), “Come Dine With Me” (W Network), “The Healthy Gourmet” (OWN Network) and “Daytime” (Rogers). He also appeared in the 2011 major motion film, Walt Disney’s “Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure”. Baldini’s clever patter, combined with his devious Magical sleights and smooth sounding voice, always make for an exceptionally entertaining experience.
Music Performance by Ben Bootsma
Local musician Ben Boostma is bringing his guitar and his heart to our summer events. Ben will bring his cool sound to a hot day (at least we hope it will be).
